It reveals the high order thoughts that went into the character, and the reasoning for adding scenes that were not in the novel which show Snow tending to his rose garden. It’s an amazing read!
Dear Gary Ross:
Power. That’s what this is about? Yes? Power and the forces that are manipulated by the powerful men and bureaucracies trying to maintain control and possession of that power?
Power perpetrates war and oppression to maintain itself until it finally topples over with the bureaucratic weight of itself and sinks into the pages of history (except in Texas), leaving lessons that need to be learned unlearned.
Power corrupts, and, in many cases, absolute power makes you really horny. Clinton, Chirac, Mao, Mitterrand.
Not so, I think, with Coriolanus Snow. His obsession, his passion, is his rose garden. There’s a rose named Sterling Silver that’s lilac in colour with the most extraordinarily powerful fragrance – incredibly beautiful – I loved it in the seventies when it first appeared. They’ve made a lot of off shoots of it since then.

Is that rose in a tiny vase? How awesome does the Capitol seal look?
Happy President’s Day! President Snow says hello.
Check out this chilling Valentine’s Day card with a white rose (no spoilers!) that EW received in the mail-
From all of us here in the Capitol, I would like to wish you a happy Valentine’s Day and a happy Hunger Games.
I’ll see you on March 23rd.
President Coriolanus Snow
Capitol.pn has released a message from President Snow to the citizens of Panem. You can now post letters, photos, and postcards to support your favorite tributes through the official website.
This started the gears turning, and now I’m curious to see what sorts of back stories others might imagine as to how Panem began. While reading The Hunger Games, did you envision what might have happened to North America to result in this dystopian future? How far in the future to you see think of the story existing? We’d love to hear the different perspectives on possible prequel events that led to the 74th Hunger Games!
Exciting Hunger Games casting news!!! Donald Sutherland has been cast as President Snow!! We received confirmation straight from Lionsgate!
DONALD SUTHERLAND CAST AS PRESIDENT SNOW IN LIONSGATE’S THE HUNGER GAMES
LOS ANGELES, CA, May 31, 2011- Lionsgate® and the filmmakers of THE HUNGER GAMES are pleased to announce that Donald Sutherland has been cast in the role of President Snow in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel.
SUTHERLAND, star of such iconic films as M*A*S*H, Ordinary People , Klute and Kelly’s Heroes, will next be seen in this summer’s comedy, Horrible Bosses and recently starred in The Mechanic with Jason Statham and Ben Foster, The Eagle with Channing Tatum and the highly-successful long form adaptation of Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth.
About The Role
President Snow has been the autocratic ruler of Panem and its contained districts for some 25 years at the outset of the story. With a snake-like appearance, he is cruel and ruthless in his intimidation and control tactics.
About The Film
Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.
Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
THE HUNGER GAMES will be directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Collins’ best-selling novel, which has over 3 million copies in print in the United States alone, is the first in a trilogy of novels which have developed a global following.
Lionsgate will release “The Hunger Games” on March 23, 2012.
Yes!!! I love it! Donald Sutherland is perfect!
Well??? What do you guys think? Happy so far with the cast?
Thank you Lionsgate!
Are Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, and Lenny Kravitz Going To Be Offered Roles In The Hunger Games?
According to NYMag.com they will be! In a recent article NYMag.com states that actors Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, and Lenny Kravitz are on the verge of receiving offers for roles in the Hunger Games movie -
The paranoia and secrecy surrounding The Hunger Games at Lionsgate Films have reached a level befitting the totalitarian state of Panem: We’re told that not only are Hollywood agents being forced to sign nondisclosure agreements in order to receive offers for clients, but that even their assistants are being forced to sign NDAs, too. Nonetheless, Vulture has been able to glean that a passel of offers have gone out to talent, most notably to Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci and Lenny Kravitz. We’re told that Harrelson’s offer is to play the role of the Head Gamemaker, Seneca Crane, of the 74th Hunger Games.
Also said to be receiving Hunger Games offers: Stanley Tucci and Lenny Kravitz, though exactly which roles they’ve been offered is, for now, still unclear. One can imagine that after starring as the aesthetically obsessed art director Nigel in The Devil Wears Prada, Tucci would make for an excellent Cinna; then again, he’s so imperious, Tucci could be a great President Snow, too. And as to Kravitz’s involvement, we’re at a loss, but we’ll keep you posted.
Wow .. Woody as Seneca Crane? Very interesting!
Personally — I could see Stanley as Cinna, but he would make an amazing President Snow!
What about Lenny? Any thoughts on who he could portray?
Either way, like we’ve said before, unless official confirmation has been received straight from Lionsgate we will consider this to be a rumor.
In any event .. what do think about the possibility of these three very known actors being in the Hunger Games? And what roles do you think they would fit? Let us know in the comments section!
