Jack Quaid was brilliant as Marvel in The Hunger Games, and he happened perchance upon a book signing as fans waited for the three stars in Union Square–
Have you been noticed more in public now that you’ve been in a movie?
No, except for this one time when…I don’t know what random turn of events led to this but…I was walking through Union Square and there happened to be a book signing for the three leads of the movie. They were at Barnes and Noble and I walked by this line of people that was going down the block and I was like, “What is this?” And they all started to recognize me.
And then you ran away?
No, I actually stayed. I signed some stuff and took a few photos and then I was like, “I’ve got to go take a test.” And I left, but that’s been like the only time and that’s fine. I’m fine with not being recognized. It’s actually better if I’m not.
Jack, I can say for sure that your tests are more important than your fans, so stay strong.
A few weeks ago CNN iReport asked fans to submit their Hunger Games questions for Liam Hemsworth, Amandla Stenberg, Dayo Okeniyi, Leven Rambin and Jack Quaid. Check out the resulting interview with the fan video questions that CNN selected.
Part 2 of the Hunger Games red carpet premiere interviews by E! Online.
The dapper actor explains how director Gary Ross received his audition tape. Plus, which costar made him want to do the movie?
During the “Hunger Games” Movie mall tour and at last night’s black carpet (loved that!) premiere, we had the opportunity to learn more about the minor characters of the “Hunger Games” movie, mainly Tributes like Jack Quaid, who plays Marvel in the film. Here’s what he had to say about his experience being on set of one of the biggest movie franchises ever:
“I’ve been on sets my whole life,” Quaid told Interview Magazine. “But this is the first time in front of the camera and not in a chair with Sour Patch Kids from the craft services truck. It was a new sensation. It was weird . . . I really liked it.” Quaid is currently studying Theater at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He had previously appeared in short films that can be seen on Funny or Die, but “The Hunger Games” is his first professional experience.
In the film, Quaid plays Marvel, one of the 24 “Tributes” chosen to compete in the televised games where teenagers are forced to battle to the death. Quaid said about his character, “I wouldn’t say he’s the sharpest tool in the shed, but he is ecstatic to be there and he just goes for it.”
The character of Marvel is one of the “Career Tributes” who have been preparing since childhood to compete in the Games (unlike Katniss, who volunteers to keep her younger sister from being chosen). This required Quaid to show his bloodthirsty side at his audition. He told People Magazine that part of his casting session involved choosing a fake weapon to wield: “It was between a Nerf crossbow, an Airsoft gun and a plastic knife. I chose the knife.”
Quaid said shooting the movie was “brutal at times.” He recalled, “We had torrential downpours, flooding, scorching heat and then a bear would wander onto the set. But it was an amazing bonding experience. We definitely all had a great story to tell about what we did on our summer vacation.” He said in Interview that he was also warned that he might have to face the backlash from fans because of his character’s dastardly acts: “When I got cast, I was told that people would be spitting on me in the streets.”
Come on, Jack. We’re not THAT barbaric.
Anyway, he was incredibly lucky to land the “Hunger Games” as his first movie! I’m curious as to whether we might be seeing more from the Tributes in the film. From what we’ve heard, several of them created their own backstories for their characters.

During some of their downtime from filming The Hungers Games in North Carolina last summer, some of the cast enjoyed flying through the trees at Navitat Canopy Adventures on their zip line! Plus they are teaming up with US Weekly on a sweepstakes “Win A Trip to Asheville”!
ASHEVILLE N.C. – When their characters weren’t fighting for their lives in the outdoor arena staged in the rugged terrain of western North Carolina, many of the cast of the upcoming movie “The Hunger Games” spent some of their downtime flying through the trees at NAVITAT CANOPY ADVENTURES.
The world-class zip line canopy tour located just 20 minutes north of downtown Asheville hosted at least seven of the young stars while they were on location in the area last summer shooting the highly anticipated motion picture opening on March 23.
“We are so excited that so many of ‘The Hunger Games’ cast and crew visited us while they were in the area last summer,” said Abby Burt, Branding & Marketing Leader at NAVITAT, which opens March 31 for the 2012 season.
“We were thrilled to show them the beauty and excitement of our course, and can’t wait to see how the movie showcases the natural beauty of western North Carolina.
Taking the tour were Josh Hutcherson, who plays Peeta, one of the movie’s lead characters, and Leven Rambin, Jacqueline Emerson, Alexander Ludwig, Dayo Okeniyi, Jack Quaid and Ian Nelson, who play some of Peeta’s competitors known as the Tributes in “The Hunger Games.” Hutcherson liked the experience so much he returned twice more during his stay in Asheville for tours, including the exclusive NAVITAT AT NIGHT tour.
More on the sweepstake and Navitat after the break!
