Chapter 27
“Out of the corner of my eye, I see Peeta extend his hand. I look at him, unsure. One more time? For the audience? he says. His voice isn’t angry. It’s hollow, which is worse. Already the boy with the bread is slipping away from me. I take his hand, holding on tightly, preparing for the moment when I will finally have to let go.”
Pg. 360 Blinding lights. The deafening roar rattles the metal under my feet. Then there’s Peeta just a few yards away. He looks so clean and healthy and beautiful, I can hardly recognize him. But his smile is the same whether in mud or in the Capitol and when I see it, I take about three steps and fling myself into his arms.
*Though the Hunger Games are a fight to the death, the roars of the Capitol citizens makes it obvious that to them is nothing more than a show.
And though Katniss isn’t very sure about her feelings toward Peeta, it’s obvious that she cares about him. More…

Chapter 26
Pg. 346 The hovercraft materializes overhead and two ladders drop, only there’s no way I’m letting go of Peeta. I keep one arm around him as I help him up, and we each place a foot on the first rung of the ladder. ..I can see that while our muscles are immobile, nothing is preventing the blood from draining out of Peeta’s left. Sure enough, the minute the door closes behind us and the current stops, he slumps to the floor unconscious.
*Katniss and Peeta are both victors and can finally go home. Peeta’s injury is seems to only get worse though to the point of him losing unconsciousness. More…

Chapter 25
”I stare at Peeta in disbelief as the truth sinks in. They never intended to let us both live. This has all been devised by the Gamemakers to guarantee the most dramatic showdown in history. And like a fool, I bought into it.”
Pg.331 Cato is running for his life. Katniss no doubt runs as well. The Capitol has generated some weird wolf-like mutations and they are beyond deadly. Cato climbs on the horn of the Cornucopia, with Katniss and Peeta soon to follow. More…

Chapter 24
Pg. 322 It dawns on me that I haven’t been very nice to Peeta today. Nagging him about how loud he was, screaming at him over disappearing. The playful romance we had sustained in the cave has disappeared out in the open, under the hot sun, with the threat of Cato looming over us. Haymitch has probably just about had it with me. And as for the audience…
*The fact that Katniss actually feels bad that she’s been mean to Peeta shows that she definitely cares about him. Maybe she’s not in love with him precisely, but she definitely has feelings for him and cares about him. More…

Chapter 23
Pg.303-306 Last time we left our Tributes, Haymitch had sent in quite the feast for our famished pair. Katniss is on to Haymitch by now. Katniss knows that if she puts on the whole ‘lovers’ show, that she and Peeta will get more presents. Katniss wants to dive into the feast, but Peeta warns her to take it slow, they do not want to relive the sickness they endured when they first came to the Capitol by eating all those rich foods. Chapter 22
Pg. 290 My eyes open and the sense of security vanishes. I’m not home, not with my mother. I’m in a dim, chilly cave, my bare feet freezing despite the cover, the air tainted with the unmistakable smell of blood. The haggard, pale face of a boy slices into view, and after an initial jolt of alarm, I feel better. “Peeta.”
*Though Katniss’ “safe place” is definitely back home in D12, Peeta has slowly, but surely, become someone that makes her feel safe and protected. More…

Chapter 21
Pg. 279 I watch the sky, hoping for one less opponent at dawn, but nobody appears tonight. Tomorrow there will be faces up there. Feasts always result in fatalities.
*Though Katniss wants to survive the Games, it dawns on her that it’s at the cost of the other Tributes lives.-Mayra More…

Part 3, Chapter 19
Pg. 247 In fact, I know if I was watching I’d loathe any tribute who didn’t immediately ally with their district partner. Besides, it just makes sense to protect each other. And in my case — being one of the star-crossed lovers from District 12 — it’s an absolute requirement if I want any more help from sympathetic sponsors.
*Katniss is debating whether she should team up with Peeta, but in the end she decides to still keep up the act of the star-crossed lovers since she knows it’s the most reliable edge she and Peeta both have. More…

Chapter 18
“Rue’s eyes have fluttered shut. Her chest moves but only slightly. My throat released the tears and they slide down my cheeks. But I have to finish the song for her. Deep in the meadow, hidden far away. A cloak of leaves, a moonbeam ray. Forget your woes and let your troubles lay. And when again it’s morning, they’ll wash away. Here it’s safe, here it’s warm. Here the daises guard you from every harm. Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true. Here is the place where I love you.
Rue’s cannon fires. I lean forward and press my lips against her temple.”
Pg.233-235 Katniss reaches Rue a second too late. The boy from District 1 has stabbed Rue in the stomach with a spear, and its bad…really bad. Katniss reacts within a split second and shoots an arrow into the boy’s neck and he removes the arrow, and then drowns in his own blood. Horrific! Katniss is on the defense looking for anyone to take down. Rue tells Katniss over and over, there is no one else around. Katniss surveys Rue and she knows there is no hope for her. Her hand reaches out and I clutch it like a lifeline. As if it’s me who’s dying instead of Rue. “You have to win,” she says. “I’m going to. Going to win for both of us now,” I promise. More…
