On Creating The Games

When Suzanne Collins originally came up with the concept for The Hunger Games, she found herself drawn towards Roman and Greek mythology.
“It’s very much based on the myth of Theseus and the Minataur, which I read when I was eight years old,” she says. “I was a huge fan of Greek and Roman mythology. As punishment for displeasing Crete, Athens periodically had to send seven youths and seven maidens to Crete, where they were thrown into the labyrinth and devoured by the Minataur, which is a monster that’s half-man and half bull. Even when I was a little kids, the story took my breath away, because it was so cruel, and Crete was so ruthless. The message is, mess with us and we’ll do something worse than kill you — we’ll kill your children. And the thing is, it was allowed; the parents sat by power-less to stop it. The cycle doesn’t end until Theseus volunteers to go, and he kills the Minotaur. In her own way, Katniss is a futuristic Theseus. I was also heavily influenced by the historical figure Spartacus. Katniss follows the same arc from slave to gladiator to rebel to face a war…”

Jennifer Lawrence Lands 2nd Place in Hottest New Hollywood Actresses!

Jennifer Lawrence Lands 2nd Place in Hottest New Hollywood Actresses!

x men first class katniss everdeen jennifer lawrence hunger games cast Jennifer Lawrence Lands 2nd Place in Hottest New Hollywood Actresses! jennifer lawrence oscar 2011 03 300x600Total Film has compiled a list of the 30 Hottest New Hollywood Actresses and our very own Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss) landed the #2 spot right behind Emma Stone as #1! Here is what they had to say about Jennifer:

The Actress: Oscar-nominated for her turn in indie favourite Winter’s Bone, Lawrence has since wowed the multiplex crowd with her eye-catching performance as Mystique in X-Men: First Class. First rule of showbusiness: wearing nothing but blue paint is a sure-fire way of getting yourself known…

Why So Hot? The Hunger Games series might just be the next Harry Potter (or at least that’s what Lionsgate will be hoping), or at the very least, the next Twilight. Starring as the saga’s feisty heroine Katniss Everdeen, and with a reappearance in the next X-Men movie also likely, Lawrence is set to take her place at the very top of the A-list.

Liam Hemsworth Talks About ‘The Hunger Games’ and Working with Jennifer Lawrence

liam hemsworth jennifer lawrence hunger games news hunger games interview hunger games cast gale hawthorne Liam Hemsworth Talks About The Hunger Games and Working with Jennifer Lawrence liam hemsworth imageRecently we posted the beautiful Vanity Fair photo-spread and an interview Krista Smith did with Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss), and now here is the Vanity Fair interview with Liam Hemsworth (Gale)! Here Liam talks about reading the books for the first time, the filming of the movie and his beautiful co-star Jennifer! Here is a bit of that interview:

Krista Smith: Did you read the books before you knew it was going to be a movie?

Liam Hemsworth: I feel like the books were just written like a movie. You read it and you can just kind of see everything. … [R]ight before I went in to read with the director, I read the first book and I loved it. I didn’t realize how good the writing was. And then I went in and read with [director] Gary Ross, and that was it.

When you were reading it, was there a certain part you identified with?

Oh yeah, it was always for Gale. It was always for Gale. I read the script, and Gale definitely felt more right than Peeta.

What sort of stuff did you identify with, with Gale?

What I thought was really interesting was—and it’s one of the hardest things to think about: one of your best friends, or someone in your family, basically going off to war. And that’s kind of what happens to Gale in the first book. As much as he’s against the government and wants to stand up to them, he really is helpless. He can’t do anything about it. … I just thought it was such a gut-wrenching kind of thought.

And how was the physical stuff?

In this one, for me, it was more about losing weight. He’s a pretty poor person.

Right, you’re starving!

Everyone’s pretty hungry, so I wanted to look a little hungry. [M]y brother said to me before I started shooting—he texted me and said something about me putting on weight. But basically his point was that it was called Hunger Games, not Eating Games. That was a wake-up call. I was like, Are you calling me fat or something?

And how was working with Jennifer Lawrence and Gary Ross?

Jennifer was great. She is fantastic. Really easy to work with, no drama, really down-to-earth, such a funny girl. Nothing but good things to say about her. She really was great to work with. And it always makes it easier when you’re working with people that you like and you enjoy being around.

Gary Ross is amazing. He’s just—he always has a billion ideas of what he wants, but has a very clear perspective also; he just makes it work. He really does. He’s trying different things and making everything look amazing.

Adapted from the best-selling novel by Matthew Quick, THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK is a touching, one-of-a-kind comedy about love and second chances.

Pat Peoples (Bradley Cooper) is a man always trying to look on the bright side of life – the title of the story takes it’s name from the expression that “every cloud has a silver lining.” Released from the hospital after losing his wife to another man, Pat believes this age-old adage is just the ticket to trying to win her back and get his life on track. Trying to remain resolutely undiscouraged, Pat moves back in with his parents and devotes himself entirely to becoming the man his wife always wanted him to be. But it’s an uphill battle. Until Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a beautiful young woman whose life also has not turned out the way she wanted. Together, the couple will try and navigate through their lives and stay true to who they are, always just one adventure away from a unique friendship, and possibly even love.
