This was the best! Too funny!
Elizabeth Banks (Effie Trinket) looked lovely arriving at the Late Show with David Letterman to promote her new film What to Expect When You’re Expecting. I can’t wait to see her movie! Looks really funny.
Love her shoes.
Here’s the latest installment of Elizabeth Banks’ video blog #EffieAnswers. In this episode she discusses her reaction to getting the role of Effie and who she first called about it.

It’s was actually the black carpet! LOL! That lucky Sarah got to kiss Lenny, Liam and Josh! AHHH!
Thank you Lili!
When Elizabeth Banks (who wore her own version of a girl-on-fire dress by Atelier Versace to The Hunger Games Premier) sat down to talk with Moviefone, she revealed not only that she bleached her eyebrows for the role of Effie, but that she is “enamored” with Woody Harrelson.
It really was so much fun. I’m enamored with Woody Harrelson. And I don’t know how much he committed to it but I committed to creating a lot of story [between Effie and Haymitch] out of nothing, frankly. Because there is nothing going on. We don’t really talk to each other. But I was committed to creating a physical relationship onscreen. We’re always sitting next to each other. It’s like we’re a team, but we hate each other.” Later she added, “Elizabeth Banks has a full-on crush on Woody Harrelson. Effie definitely has a crush on Haymitch, but Haymitch does not like Effie. That’s what I’d say is going on.”
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if Harrelson returns the love, or keeps mum on the topic. Banks also dished on Effie’s wardrobe – which she sees as “very Christian Dior haute couture from the ’40s” – as well as her inspiration for Effie’s Capitol accent, and her thoughts on Jennifer Lawrence as an actress. Today Elizabeth Banks posted some photos, on her website, of the elaborately decorated nails she had as Effie Trinket. Banks is also giving away two sets China Glaze Limited Edition Capitol Colours Collections to fans that show her the best Effie-inspired nails, with full details here.
Earlier in the week Banks also announced her new vlog called #EffieAnswes, where she’ll be answering fans questions about the Hunger Games and portraying Effie. View her video announcement of it after the break
Glamour reveals that Olympic archer Khatuna Lorig trained Jennifer Lawrence in archery for The Hunger Games. ”She shot about 100 arrows a day on an Olympic-style bow. Her technique was great!”
Also new: The makeup for the movie worked on a very large scale-
3. The movie used 35 full-time makeup artists. And there were more than 450 wigs on set to create the Hunger Games look, according to Linda Flowers, the movie’s hair director. For her freaky look as Effie Trinket, above, Elizabeth Banks was airbrushed with pale pink foundation and had a different eye makeup design for each outfit. Katniss was lower-maintenance—it took only about 20 minutes a day to create her signature braid
”Everything you see on Effie is purposeful, nothing is whimsical,” said Banks. “As an ambassador for the Capitol I wanted to make it clear Effie is oppressed, so all her clothes are constricting, corseted uncomfortable.”
She went on to say that, in the movie, “I wear crazy shoes that you would never be able to spend a 12-hour day in – I wanted her to be tortured by her clothes.”
Elizabeth Banks went from sporting rigid, spandex-tight clothes to the extremes of taking sandpaper to her skin and throwing in some latex to make it appear as if she had truly undergone plastic surgery.
”We sandpapered my skin,” admitted the actress. “We wanted to show that Effie has a cracked veneer, that perfection doesn’t exist in the Capitol – it’s actually become hideous. We layered latex and used tricks of the camera and the lighting. I like to say I was a little fearless, definitely.”
Wow. Talk about dedication to accurately playing your character! I would have never even thought of sandpapering my skin, let alone actually done it!
Did Elizabeth Banks take it too far? Or do you approve of her efforts to match as much as possible the effervescent, Capitol-manufactured District 12 escort, no matter how radical?

Elizabeth Banks (Effie Trinkett) talked to MTV’s Josh Horowitz about what scene she can’t wait to see in the Hunger Games! PLUS she secretly wanted the role of Effie when she initially read The Hunger Games!
“I’m really excited to see the actual Games,” she gushed.
Yes, Elizabeth Banks wants to see the armed and dangerous tributes tearing each other limb from limb just as much as the rest of us do…but, you know, not out of psychotic bloodlust or anything. Instead, Elizabeth described the character-driven importance of the whole arena scene—and noted that, in the context of the Games, even the “bad guys” have their own complex emotional journey to take.
“I’m really excited to see how that all plays out,” she said.
And what are the scenes of her own that she can’t wait to see in their final form?
“The Reaping, for sure,” she said. “The Reaping is amazing. We get to see a heroine step forward and show herself for the first time.”
Not to mention that Elizabeth is wearing one of the most interesting of her weird and wonderful Effie Trinket costumes during said scene—which our fashion-hungry fandom can’t wait to scope out in painstaking detail. And based on Elizabeth’s description, it sounds like a lot of the film’s actors will be excited to see the Reaping…even the ones who were, technically, already in attendance.
“It was a really remarkable scene to shoot, and it was a really difficult scene to shoot,” Elizabeth said, going on to explain that the Reaping was filmed on a day when the temperature soared to over 100 degrees. And for the extras called upon to play would-be tributes, the weather was bad news: “We had all these young kids there, just dropping like flies.”
Oh yeah, I can’t wait to see the arena! Well, actually EVERYTHING!
More of Elizabeth’s interviews with Josh after the break! She’s Team Peeta!! I love her. She is the PERFECT EFFIE!!
Insider.com: Were you prepared for the level of fandom The Hunger Games attracts?
Elizabeth Banks: Going in, I really wasn’t. Obviously, I am now [laughs]. It’s all anybody wants to talk about. I knew the books were great, I knew the characters were great and I knew Katniss was an amazing heroine, so I knew we had the goods and now it’s just a matter of whether people come see it. And I think they will – this is a really great movie. It’ll be wild to see people’s reactions to something as beloved as Suzanne’s books.
Insider: The Effie costumes look amazing and you’ve spoken about the difficulty of navigating in them. Did you run for sweatpants at the end of every day?
Elizabeth: [laughs] Absolutely! Although it wasn’t actually sweatpants because it was 105 degrees on set almost every day. It was so hot, I actually got heat exhaustion when we shot The Reaping – which I’d never experienced before. It was pretty crazy. It was more like, “How little clothing can I put on?” It was all about slip dresses.
Insider: Do you have a favorite Effie ensemble?
Elizabeth: My favorite Effie ensemble is the green hair outfit – I just love the puffy sleeves. We really played with proportions. It’s all these tiny, tiny, tiny waists and then something big elsewhere – sometimes it’s the sleeves or the hips, the shoulders, the collar or the bustle. I love that green outfit, it’s the best.
