Plus he spoke on how talented Jennifer Lawrence is as an actor. Read on!

“I don’t think of him as evil,” says Sutherland of Snow. “He’s doing his job as a lifelong administrator and bureaucrat, who is trying to keep his country part of societal continuum.”

… “Gary (Ross) wanted to underscore how you maintain control, and maintain an oligarchy,” Sutherland says. “That’s why he wrote the sequence with me describing hope and fear, and he did it with such an exquisite economy.”

[Sutherland] says he “likes the fact it’s a political movie for a generation that might not know its politics…To be a part of a film that might activate a generation is really important to me.”

[On Jennifer Lawrence] “Jennifer has no tricks and no gimmicks. She’s amazing, and even she doesn’t know how she does it.”

donald sutherland Donald Sutherland: Hunger Games Might be Most Influential American Film in a Long Time joan of arc katnissDonald Sutherland, who plays President Snow in The Hunger Games, claims it might just be the most infuential American film in quite some time, comparing Katniss to Joan of Arc-

“When I read it, I thought it had the possibility to be the most influential American film since I can’t remember. What we’re dealing with is the destroyed fabric of a once-upon-a-time empire. And the empire is obviously here.” He says the parallels between the film’s heroine, Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence), and Joan of Arc are extraordinary. “I went back to Shaw and the introduction that he did for Saint Joan. Do you remember it?”

Not off the top of my head, I confess.

“It’s the preface, which is probably 40 pages long, where he breaks down everything about Joan of Arc, comparing her to Socrates, to Napoleon. The particular kind of genius and vision she had, and the ability to make effective that vision, which is the definition of genius.”

Elizabeth Banks is not the only cast member who was desperate for a role in The Hunger Games. Donald Sutherland sent an incredible email to director Gary Ross to prove that he was the right man to take on the role of President Snow. As Ross says:

It was a long thoughtful analysis of the way power is wielded and why, how it controls people and what the use of the Games were and how pernicious they were and the way that they were used as an instrument of political control.

Sutherland certainly made an impression on Ross as not only did he get the part, but his email also inspired the director to create additional scenes for him:

So I sat down in this chair and stared at the lake and came up with these two scenes. And I realised that not only were the scenes vital but they actually fit a piece that was missing. That was a gift I got from the actor.

DONALD SUTHERLAND CAST AS PRESIDENT SNOW IN LIONSGATE’S THE HUNGER GAMES

LOS ANGELES, CA, May 31, 2011- Lionsgate® and the filmmakers of THE HUNGER GAMES are pleased to announce that Donald Sutherland has been cast in the role of President Snow in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel.

SUTHERLAND, star of such iconic films as M*A*S*H, Ordinary People , Klute and Kelly’s Heroes, will next be seen in this summer’s comedy, Horrible Bosses and recently starred in The Mechanic with Jason Statham and Ben Foster, The Eagle with Channing Tatum and the highly-successful long form adaptation of Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth.

About The Role
President Snow has been the autocratic ruler of Panem and its contained districts for some 25 years at the outset of the story. With a snake-like appearance, he is cruel and ruthless in his intimidation and control tactics.

About The Film
Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.
Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

THE HUNGER GAMES will be directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Collins’ best-selling novel, which has over 3 million copies in print in the United States alone, is the first in a trilogy of novels which have developed a global following.

Lionsgate will release “The Hunger Games” on March 23, 2012.

Yes!!! I love it! Donald Sutherland is perfect!

Well??? What do you guys think? Happy so far with the cast?

Thank you Lionsgate!
