Fan Art Inspired by ‘Safe & Sound’ from ‘The Hunger Games’ Soundtrack

It’s been almost two weeks since Taylor Swift tweeted about her song Safe & Sound, featuring the Civil Wars, being on The Hunger Games soundtrack,  and the fans have been busy. The fans took Safe & Sound to the #1 spot on iTunes on Christmas, have made numerous covers of the song, and created amazing fan art, which is the focus of the rest of this post.

I’ve found three different pieces depicting the relationships in the book/movie that fellow fans think the song could be representing:

The song evokes a lot of feelings, and I think that these artists have captured that very well in their pictures by choosing to show Katniss with a character that she has a strong emotional bonds with (Prim, Peeta and Rue). I’m still not sure where Safe & Sound will fit in with the movie, but I love that the fans are using it to fuel their own creativity. Do you have a favorite out of the three, or your own Safe & Sound inspired art?

My favorite picture is the one with Rue and Katniss. It has been drawn so well. I do think that the song could fit in with either one of these characters though.

  • Peeta’s #1 Fan

I think the song is talking about her and Peeta.  Although I like the drawing with Katniss and Prim the  best.

I think this is when she is with Peeta to go to the Hunger Games and they are saying goodbye.

no at first i thought it was the scene where rue dies and then i thought peeta in the cave but maybe its when katniss and peeta are on the cornucopia waiting for cato to die

    • Andra

I thought that it might be when they are on top of the cornucopia also cause of the whole ‘come morning light you and I’ll be safe and sound’ which could be refering to in the morning they will be out of the arena

The saddest part in the book that makes you really hate the Capitol!

I know right? That part made me cry. It was so sad.

I like the song very much. I think it fits at several very emotional, dramatic points. It would go really well at the part near the end when Katniss pulls out the nightlock berries and then while she’s watching the doctors work on Peeta on the hovercraft while leaving the arena.

I really, really think, having listened to the Swift song while reading Rue’s Lullaby, this is going to be the song Katniss sings to Rue as she dies, and the Swift edit is the end-credits version.

That’s what I thought when I first heard the song

I love the one with Peeta and Katniss!!!! But I think the song is about Rue, because some of the lines in the song are similar to things that Katniss and Rue actually say/think. Maybe they’ll play it after Rue dies, as Katniss is covering her in flowers…

  • Natalie

I LOVE the song! I think they should play it some time when Katniss and Peeta are in the cave. Maybe the part when Katniss drugs Peeta so she can go get him the medicine. It would be played as he was dozing off. I think it would be really cute and I hope thats what happens in the movie!

    • Jj_rramirez

      I thought the same!

Really beautiful. They all did great :]

  • sakura

is that picture of Katniss and that girl (Ryuu)?

  • Guest

    is that Rue?

  • Lilybnorris

I think it would really be good in the cave, but it sounds a lot like it would be with a scene with Prim

Someone realesed an article that said Jennifer Lawrence would be singing Rue’s Lullaby just like in the books so Safe and Sound wouldn’t be for Rue’s death. But the pictures are still great.

  • Rubygem77

I thought “No one can hurt you now” sounded like somthing that would be sung about a dead person, a.k.a. Rue

I think this song relates more to Katniss and Rue. After, when Katniss sings the lullaby and Rue passes away, Katniss covers her with flowers. In, my opinion, the song should be placed after Katniss takes one last look at Rue after she is decorated in those flowers. As she’s walking away to find a place to sleep , the song should be played. Not only would it fit with the story line, but also be a part of strategic directing. It gives the viewers time to let what happen sink in and provides a well transition. This is, I think, the best time for the song to be played but when Katniss and Peeta are on the Cornucopia away from the mutts and Cato is also a spot to be considered as well. I do think Taylor did a very good job with this song. It’s unlike her and very haunting, in a good way. After all, isn’t that what the Hunger Games is all about?
