Entertainment Weekly is reporting that actress Jena Malone, who starred in “Sucker Punch” and the History miniseries “Hatfields and McCoys,” could be in the running for the role of Johanna Mason.
Apparently Jena posted a “Catching Fire” graphic on her Instagram account along with a message to her fans, saying, “Wish me luck. I may be the next victor in the hunger games…gonna need some heavy tribute action on this one.”
Another rumor was floating around last week regarding Mia Wasikowska as a possible contender for playing the District 7 Tribute. However, according to those who represent the “Alice in Wonderland actress,” she has not been offered the role and has other commitments that would preclude her from accepting.
At first, it was difficult for me to see Jena Malone as bad-mannered, devious Johanna since I remember her as the vulnerable pre-teen daughter from the drama “Stepmom.” However, having recently seen her as a woman in “Hatfields and McCoys,” I’m confident she can at the very least pull of Johanna’s vicious side. Her character in the miniseries, Nancy McCoy, was manipulative and kind of cold-blooded when it came to her family’s enemies, the Hatfields. I can see those same characteristics being translated over to this character. Plus, Jena can obviously rock Johanna’s trademark “spiky hair.”
Props to ARayOfSunshine (Nida) for catching this!
