MTV’s Five Lessons for ‘Catching Fire’

catching fire MTV’s Five Lessons for ‘Catching Fire’ catchingfireimageWith Gary Ross gone and Francis Lawrence in the director’s chair, we can anticipate a different approach to the “Hunger Games” sequel. While we cannot know what direction he’s planning to go in just yet, the folks at MTV already know what they would do similarly or differently. In the following article, they have assembled a list of warnings and suggestions taken from the “Hunger Games” to carry toward the production of “Catching Fire.”

DO keep the arena underwraps
This one isn’t so much for [the director] as it is for the Gamemakers at Lionsgate, but we have to recognize the studio’s smart decision to use only pre-Games footage in their aggressive marketing campaign for the film. In fact, I’d go so far as to say my favorite parts of the movie were from the arena, largely because they were fresh and unexpected. With the Quarter Quell’s intriguing new venue, Lionsgate would be wise to build anticipation by keeping the tropical death trap shrouded in mystery.

DON’T skimp on the CGI
If there was a consistent complaint I heard from “Hunger Games” fans following the film’s release, it was that the Girl on Fire scene — in which Katniss and Peeta introduce themselves to the Capitol, riding atop a chariot and flaunting flame-licked jumpsuits representative of their coal-mining home — was … underwhelming. The flame effect just didn’t look real enough. With a slew of new sci-fi aspects introduced in “Catching Fire,” including mutated monkeys, we hope [a bit more can be invested] in the film’s digital technology.

DO capitalize on Stanley Tucci
Say what you will about Jennifer Lawrence’s gripping, gritty performance as Katniss Everdeen, but if anyone could be categorized as the film’s scene-stealer, it was most certainly Stanley Tucci, whose blue-haired, big-teethed Caesar Flickerman was nothing short of mesmerizing (and a handy exposition device to boot!). Heck, I’d pay to watch a Caesar Flickerman spin-off once all three (four?) “Hunger Games” films debut. “Caesar Flickerman: Not So Blue.” Think about it, Lionsgate.

DON’T downplay the dangers of the arena
Between her 23 fellow tributes, tracker jackers and muttations, Katniss had plenty to contend with in the arena. But, as my roommate so astutely pointed out to me long after I watched the film and didn’t notice, we never really see Katniss hungry or thirsty. Limiting the violence for a PG-13 rating is an understandable edit, but why dull down the deadliness of the Games otherwise? In “Catching Fire,” we need to see Katniss and her fellow tributes truly struggle, not simply limp along.

DO make artful additions (especially if they’re directed by Steven Soderbergh)
By shifting the viewpoint of the film from Katniss’ first-person perspective, Ross was able to open up the world of Panem in a way we hadn’t experienced before. The addition of the control room, Seneca Crane’s implied death by berries and, most notably, the District 11 riot only added to the film.

I’d have to say I agree with most of these! Especially excluding Arena footage from the trailers and clips. As desperate as I was for a glimpse, it was a smart move for building anticipation.

What are your do’s and don’ts for “Catching Fire,” now that you’ve seen the movie?

  • Wizard1strule

I do want more dialogue between katniss and peeta. I.missed more of that

  • Soryane13

Same here !!! I totally agree with each comments. Plus, i think the C.Flickerman special feature is a great idea. I totaly want to see him more !!! S.Tucci was so PERFECT (the all cast is great)!! As much as i want to see the 2nd book arena, i agree, no showings of the arena or the game in the trailers, clip before the movie is released… it was a good decision not to show it for the 1st movie. My only add to that would be the emotional scenes : mostly Peeta and Katniss interaction with each other. I hope they keep Peeta gesture to Rue’s family when they start the Districts’ Tour.

    • BellaAlly

      More Flickerman?  Oh, HECK YES.

  • Kciggy

U guys need too get a life and stop obsessing with the hunger games. I love the movie and stuff but im not crazy about it.

  • BellaAlly

Ah, my dos and don’ts…  Well, I am a huge fan but I honestly think the movie fell extremely flat.  It was unexciting and in some parts, I’d dare to even call it blank.  Haymitch and Caesar Flickerman were the only best parts.  Well, except for drool-worthy Peeta…  oh, Josh Hutcherson…
    Anyway, dos and dont’s:
    1.  PLEASE follow the book more closely!  More resemblance to the book in conversation, action, and the fall of events is very important!
    2.  PLEASE add more music into the movie.  At the reaping in the first movie, it was very boring because other than occasional dialogue, there was nothing, which made it very dull.
    3.  DO NOT make the viewers sick with shaky camera scenes!  I couldn’t even SEE what was happening!  The only place I’d advice shaky camera scenes is at the Cornucopia, like in the first movie.
    4.  DO NOT, I repeat NOT, get a well-known actor/actress to play the Quarter Quell tributes.  No Robert Pattinson, preferably no Alex Pettyfer.  I don’t care how hot they are.  Surprise us.
    5.  PLEASE play up more on the violence.  I’d give the first movie a PG rating if I could.  Show us more.  I was very disappointed in Cato’s death.
    6.  Get Woody Harrelson (not sure I spelled that right) to act more drunk.  He was seriously underplayed, and the scene where he staggered around onstage at the reaping was missed.
Everyone was underplayed and the first movie, to me, was a 1 out of 5 stars.

  • HG FREAK!!

Ya, the cast was not too good. I wud have suggested looking for new people but i guess that cant be done now. And the scenes shud be more surprising and unexpected. Katniss’ interview dress was supposed to be covered with jewels and stuff, but it was just some mediocre red drapery. I couldn’t believe my eyes then really. And for Heaven’s sake make the movie a tad bit brighter! I couldn’t see a thing that was happening….but what the movie missed was suspense. When Peeta confessed his love for Katniss, no one, i mean no one wud have got the goosebumps that the book gave us… I just hope catching fire follows the book more closely and gives us the effect that the book gave us…

  • Filippo Paa

please don’t reveal the arena in the trailers..! Such bad idea..

  • JAG22512

I think the first film was done extremly well but I think gary ross really dumbed down the dangers of the areana but it was a M rated film, so you can understand why, and what is with the camera shaking!!!! It annoyed me so much. Also with the new characters in catching fire, I believe they should truly capture the essence of the character (as they did in the first film) but don’t get someone like zac efron or taylor launter because they look good without a shirt! (not that I think they do)
but I LOVE the hunger games and hopefully the next film will do jusrice to the books
