Four Things that Won’t Be in The Hunger Games

venia octavia hunger games pictures gary ross flavius avox Four Things that Wont Be in The Hunger Games president snow seneca craneThe 13-page cover story in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly reveals four aspects of the book that won’t make the cut to the big screen.

Suzanne Collins was the first to insist on brevity in order to keep the emotional core of the story intact. Director Gary Ross and producer Nina Jacobson explain the changes.

  • Madge: Jacobson says that “you have so little time to establish these characters. So if Madge has to get thrown under the bus so you can make sure that an audience who hasn’t read the books understands the devotion between Katniss and Prim, then that’s what you do.”
  • Focus on Avoxes:  Director Gary Ross explains “we have Avoxes, but we don’t digress in the film. I think it’s a wonderful way to populate the world, but there are just certain [cutbacks] that have to happen.”
  • Focus on the prep team: Octavia, Flavius and Venia are all in the movie but we won’t really get to know them. Jacobson says “we agreed that the main thing is to establish Cinna. So we had to sort of borrow from Peter to pay Paul!”
  • Capitol gadgets: Gadgets like food automators won’t be shown. Jacobson explains “we didn’t want the Capitol to appear too fanciful. It has to appear ominous and threatening. The Capitol has to be a mind-blowing experience, but it can’t be Whoville.”

Also of interest: Taylor Swift explains the vibe of the soundtrack: “one of  [soundtrack supervisor T Bone Burnett]‘s objectives was to make Appalachian music 300 years from now-what Americana and bluegrass music would turn into in the future.”

It’s popping up on newstands and available now on iPad.

Well that sound’s okay. I was seriously woried it would be more than this things missing in the movie.

I’m gonna miss the prep team….though I guess they don’t really become strong characters until the last two books.

Great explanation for why things are cut. I’ve had that same exact discussion about Madge almost 50 times with my friends. I know we all want our book exactly the way it is, but the truth is that film and print are totally different mediums, and some things just need to get sacrificed when you turn a book into a movie. I would rather maintain the integrity of the message and feel of the book, even if you have to lose some minor characters or details.

I know there has to be cuts, but I still hate to see them. The book is so great, it is the details of everything that makes it great. How are they going to make the other two?

If you are making the next books into a movie, well then you’ve stuffed that up pretty bad. Madge is her covcer for when she finds out about the uprising in district 8!!!!! An d also if you do cut her out how will Katness know about Madge’s mothers twin sister being in the hunger games with Haymitch.

I have a feeling that will be a detail most will overlook…
